About the program...

Orchestra students at Washington Junior High receive one small group lesson and two large ensemble rehearsals each week. The 6th grade Concert Strings rehearses on Mondays and Thursdays during 9th period. The 7th and 8th grade Symphonic Orchestra rehearses on Mondays and Thursdays during 7th period.

The Symphonic Orchestra performs string literature as well as full orchestra music, using wind, brass, and percussion players from the Washington Symphonic Band. In addition to the large group rehearsals, every orchestra student attends a small group lesson that meets once a week, on a rotating basis during the regularly scheduled class periods.

Lessons adhere to a strict rotation schedule to minimize impact of time missed from academic classes, with make-up lessons available as needed. Small group lessons focus on developing technical skills specific to the instrument. 0rchestra rehearsals concentrate on preparing music for upcoming concerts as well as applying the skills covered in lessons.

An extra-curricular offering in orchestra includes Bluegrass Strings, which teaches fiddling, jazz, and improvisational techniques. Bluegrass Strings meets on Monday and Thursday mornings at 7:20 from October through May. It is open to all 7th and 8th graders, and to 6th graders by invitation.
