About the instructors...

Erika McCann

Mrs. Erika McCann directs the sixth grade band, eighth grade band and jazz ensemble. Mrs. McCann is a graduate of Millikin University, where she participated in the Wind Ensemble, Flute Choir, and International Flute Society. Currently, she enjoys being a part of the Naperville Flute Choir and Naperville Municipal Band.

Mrs. McCann has a Master\'s degree in School Counseling from Concordia University and a Master\'s degree in Leadership and Administration from Benedictine University. Mrs. McCann is also a National Board Certified teacher by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards.

Outside of the school day Mrs. McCann is a thrill seeker. She has been skydiving, enjoyed a stunt plane ride and the SkyJump free fall off of the Stratosphere hotel in Las Vegas. She loves roller coasters, especially the Cedar Point theme park. Mrs. McCann is an advanced certified scuba diver along with her husband. Mrs. McCann and her husband have a dog, Guinness, who loves to go running and enjoys watching TV.



David Carroll

Mr. Carroll has taught band at Maplebrook since 1997.  He also teaches at Madison Junior High School. He also writes drill and assists the Lisle High School Marching Band. Mr. Carroll has also contributed several articles for The Instrumentalist magazine.

Mr. Carroll\'s likes to ride his bike great distances, as well as program computer software as a hobby. Among his creations are:

  • Musicracer music \"flashcard\" game to help students with music literacy.
  • The Scheduler online music lesson scheduler software
  • Music Assessor, a music teacher candidate technique profiler
  • Fingering-Charts.com, a fingering resource site for band directors
  • The web site you are currently looking at!

    Mr. Carroll comes from a very musical family. His older brother played sousaphone at the University of Illinois, and his little brother played baritone at the University of Washington. Sadly, both brothers went to the Rose Bowl, but not Mr. Carroll.

    Mr. Carroll is an alumnus of the University of Illinois, where he graduated with high honors. He completed his Masters of Music degree from Northern Illinois Univeristy. He was also awarded National Board Certification by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards in 2006, and currently mentors other teachers applying for certification. Lastly, Mr. Carroll is currently a Doctoral candidate at NIU in the area of Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Curriculum Leadership.




  • About the program...

    The Madison Band Program emphasizes a comprehensive approach to music learning. Each member receives one small group lesson a week and three full enesemble rehearsals a week. The full ensembles meet according to the following schedule:

    Students are eligible for the following three awards:

  • Ionian Award - Given to any student that plays 12 IMEA lines without an error
  • Spirit Award - One band member from each grade is given the Spirit Award for demonstrating exemplary dedication and effort.
  • Maestro Aaward - One band member from each grade is given the Maestro Award for demonstrating exemplary musicianship and technique on his or her instrument.

    Students may also participate in Jazz Band. Madison has two jazz bands. These ensembles are considered extra-curricular; however, once a student commits himself or herself to the ensemble, all performances and rehearsals are required to sustain membership.

    The jazz rehearsal schedule will be posted when available. Jazz rehearsals will be held before school.
