    South Side Band Festival: Thursday Nov. 14th @ Naperville Central High School 7 PM - 8th grade only

    February
  • Winter Band Concert: Wednesday, Feb. 26th @ KJHS 7:30 PM start – 6th, 7th, 8th grade bands

    Solo/Ensemble Festival: Saturday, Feb. 22nd, @ Lincoln Junior High- 8:00 AM-12:00 PM all students. Students will be assigned a specific time within the 8am-noon time frame for performance

About the instructors...

Michael McManis

Michael McManis has been teaching band at Kennedy Junior High since the fall of 2000. He has earned a Master\'s in Music Education, an undergraduate degree in Music from DePaul University as well as Master Certification by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. Mr. McManis currently works as an active freelance musician in the Chicago-land area. In addition, he is an active clinician on jazz improvisation, as well as a clinician of the traditions of Afro-Caribbean Jazz.

As Director of Bands at Kennedy Junior High, Mr. McManis co-conducts Kennedy Winds, Wind Ensemble, and Concert Band with Mr. Dethrow. In addition, he is the director of the Jazz Ensemble.



Matthew Dethrow

Mr. Dethrow has been teaching band in District 203 since 1996. He earned his Bachelor degree from DePaul University and a Masters degree in Educational Organization and Leadership from the University of Illinois. He is certified by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards and teaches band at Meadow Glens Elementary and Kennedy Junior High.

Concert Band
All 6th grade band students perform in Concert Band. Students will rehearse two days per week during supervised study on either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. The schedule is designed to meet the individual needs of each student. All 6th grade band students will perform all band concerts as one ensemble.

Rehearsal Times:
Tuesday and Thursday - 9th period - Full band
Monday - 9th period - Percussion class
Wednesday - 9th period - Beginners and Instruments switches


Wind Ensemble
Wind Ensemble is an ensemble of primarily 7th grade students, with enrichment opportunities provided to the most select 6th grade students who intend to make a serious commitment to the performance of music at Kennedy. The group is under the direction of Michael McManis and Matthew Dethrow. Members are expected to attend all rehearsals, lessons, and performances. Wind Ensemble members will perform high quality musical literature intended to challenge them as individuals as well as their understanding of an individual\'s impact within a larger group. Wind Ensemble members are expected to arrive prepared for all lessons and large group rehearsals. Members are encouraged to independently master the majority of the technical aspects of the assigned literature and independently seek out any necessary assistance.

Monday, Wednesday, Friday - 7th period

Kennedy Winds
Kennedy Winds is the most select of the concert bands at Kennedy for 7th and 8th grade students. Kennedy Winds is primarily made up of 8th grade students, with enrichment opportunities provided to the most select 7th grade students. The group is under the direction of Michael McManis and Matthew Dethrow. Students in this group are typically the most dedicated instrumentalists in the program and are dedicated to the most outstanding performing group possible.

Members of this group are expected to make a 100 percent commitment to the ensemble in terms of attendance, musical preparation, and participation in concerts and festivals. Kennedy Winds members are expected to apply higher level thinking skills in an effort to become independent learners in mastering technical aspects of musical literature. Large group rehearsals focus on musical interpretation and expression. Kennedy Winds members are expected to independently prepare technical aspects of literature prior to rehearsing together in a large group setting.

Monday, Wednesday, Friday - 6th period



Jazz
Jazz Ensemble is the more select of the two jazz groups offered at Kennedy. This group is under the direction of Michael McManis. Jazz Ensemble is an audition-based group. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required. Auditions for Jazz Ensemble will take place in late September. Anyone interested in auditioning should email Mr. McManis or Mr. Dethrow for details.

Jazz Band is the second of the two jazz groups offered at Kennedy. This group is under the direction of Matthew Dethrow. Jazz Band is an audition-based group. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required. Auditions for Jazz Band will take place in late September. Anyone interested in auditioning should email Mr. McManis or Mr.Dethrow for details.
