About the instructor...Miss Tarson received her Bachelor of Science degree specializing in Elementary - General Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign in 1993. In 2000, she received her Master of Music degree specializing in Ethnomusicology from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. During the 2004 school year, Susan became a National Board Certified Teacher and earned her Orff-Schulwerk Level I Certification at VanderCook College of Music. Miss Tarson currently teaches grades K-5th general music education at Scott Elementary School four days per week, and one day per week at Ellsworth Elementary School. She also sponsors the Scott School World Music Ensemble, an extra-curricular activity for Scott 5th graders. In 2002 and 2010, Miss Tarson was nominated for the NCUSD #203 Those Who Excel Award. She has also written and received grants to purchase instruments from the Naperville Education Foundation (NEF). Miss Tarson is a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), Greater Chicago American Orff-Schulwerk Association (GCAOSA) and Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI), a professional music fraternity. | About the program...General music classes meet bi-weekly. Ms. Tarson\'s primary goal is to promote an understanding and love of music through listening, moving, responding, performing, composing and creating. Scott School also offers the World Music Ensemble for 5th grade students. Members have performed at the 5th grade program, for the volunteer luncheon, at the state music education conference, and at NIU for music education faculty and students. While at NIU the WME members also experience a hands on workshop playing Javanese and Balinese Gamelan and Caribbean Steel Pan presented by NIU faculty. |
