About the program...

Small Group Lessons:
Weekly lessons are the backbone of the program where the core of the playing concepts and techniques are taught at the beginning level. Students come to their lessons on a rotating schedule once a week (Tuesday for 4th grade, Thursday for 5th grade). These small group lessons are rotated through nine 30 minute slots so that the students will only miss the same class once every nine weeks. The rotating schedule ensures that classroom instructional time is minimally impacted. Students are excused from lessons only for testing. Missed lessons can be made up on Friday mornings at one of the two make up lesson times.

Practice, Points, and Expectations:
Each lesson every student has the possibility to earn 3 points; 1 point for their instrument, 1 point for their folder and book, and 1 point for bringing a pencil. These points will go towards their materials grade on their band report card.

As for practice points, each student will receive 2 points for every 10 minutes practiced. The requirement is that each student practices at least one hour a week. The schedule of every student is different and one hour of practice may be difficult some weeks and easy other weeks. This is where the points work to the student’s advantage.

There is an expected one hour of practice per week (12 points). These practice points go towards their lesson preparation grade on their band report card. The way the points work for the student is that some weeks they may receive more than 12 points and some weeks they may receive less than 12 points depending on the amount of practice minutes. The weeks they practice more will balance out the weeks they practice less. The obligation of the student is to achieve the points possible for practice in whatever way they can.

In lessons the students will fill out their Name, Group, Date, and Assignment. These slips should come home every week. Throughout the week parents record the time practiced each day (even if it is zero). At the end of the week, total the minutes and sign the slip in ink. The students will return the slip at their next lesson and receive a new one for the next week. Their practice minutes will be converted into points when they arrive at their lesson for the week.

Also, I suggest that all students practice with the CD (yellow disc) that is provided for them in their books or with the Smart Music computer program available for them on their DVD (black disc). The track numbers coincide with the exercise numbers that they are assigned.

Schedules:
Students will receive a paper copy of the lesson schedule each month. In addition, I will send out an electronic version to your e-mails. Every month you will receive a new schedule. The schedule for September is attached to this letter.

Extra Help Sessions:
Extra Help Sessions are available to your children before and after school. These sessions are scheduled in 15 minute increments. The students may sign up for these sessions on a form that is outside of the band room door. The sessions are available on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings along with Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. I suggest that students sign up with like instruments so the sessions can be the most effective.

Full Band starts the week of October 8th:
In addition to the small group lessons band students also participate in full band. Full band meets for 40 minutes each week at the following times:
4th Grade – 11:45-12:25 – TUESDAYS
5th Grade – 11:45-12:25 – THURSDAYS
