About the instructor...

Ann Schinske

Ms. Schinske received her Bachelor of Music Education from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. Additionally, she received her Master of Music Education from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. She is a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) , American Orff-Schulwerk Association (AOSA) - Level I, and a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT).




About the program...

Students create a lifelong passion for music.

PERFORMING:
1. Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
2. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
(District-wide assessment in 3rd grade)

CREATING:
3. Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
4. Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines.
5. Reading and notating music.
(District-wide assessment in 4th grade)

RESPONDING:
6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.
7. Evaluating music and music performances.
(District-wide assessment in 2nd grade)

CONNECTING:
8. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
9. Understanding music in relation to history and culture.
(District-wide assessment in 5th grade)

Each grade level will cover the following goals:

First Grade

  • Expressive Qualities - loud/soft sounds, getting faster/slower
  • Tone Color/Sound - high/low instruments
  • Duration - steady beat/ no steady beat, longer/shorter sounds, notation for eighth notes/ quarter note
    Pitch - higher/lower
  • Creation/Performance - beat/rhythm on unpitched instruments




    Second Grade

  • Identifying beat and no beat
  • Rhythm of words
  • Notation for quarter note, eighth notes, half note and quarter rest
  • Rhythm patterns for quarter note, eighth notes, and quarter rest
  • Higher and lower pitches
  • Mi So La pitches on staff
  • Do Mi So pitches with hand signals
  • Identifying verse-refrain AB form and ABA form
  • Unpitched instrument families





    Third Grade

  • Differentiating between steady beat and rhythms in duple meter
  • Identifying eighth notes, quarter notes, half notes, and quarter rests
  • Identifying do, re, mi, so, and la pitches
  • Differentiating between vocal and instrumental tone color (sound)
  • Moving in response to melodic direction
  • Identifying verse-refrain (AB form)
  • Recognizing dynamic changes
  • Recognizing tempo changes
  • Accompanying three-chord songs on autoharp
  • Playing body percussion
  • Playing Orff orchestration
  • Singing with correct vocal technique




    Fourth Grade

  • Read rhythms in duple and triple meters
  • Play pitched instruments to show duple and triple meters
  • Read eighth note, quarter note, half note, and quarter rest rhythms
  • Identify sixteenth notes
  • Recognize patterns using do, re, mi, so, and la pitches
  • Identify phrases
  • Practice good posture and diaphragmatic breathing
  • Sing with pitch letter names D, E, G, A, and B
  • Sing repeated notes, steps, skips
  • See graphic notation for melodic contours
  • Identify tonal center: tonic, subdominant, dominant
  • Recognize harmonic changes
  • Identify families of instruments




    Fifth Grade

  • Recognize various tempos - allegro, moderato, largo
  • Read eighth note, quarter note, half note, and quarter rest rhythms
  • Identify sixteenth notes
  • Recognize patterns using do, re, mi, so, and la pitches
  • Identify phrases
  • Practice good posture and diaphragmatic breathing
  • Sing with pitch letter names D, E, G, A, and B
  • Sing repeated notes, steps, skips
